    Policy Question(s)
    A. In many jurisdictions high risk AI systems must be audited either by internal or external parties. How can inclusive governance of AI systems in the workplace strengthen protection against high risk AI systems? B. AI literacy is in general low. What initiatives are needed to ensure that developers, deployers and workers have the skills needed to responsibly develop, operationalise and use AI systems?
What will participants gain from attending this session? Many debates on the responsible development and deployment of digital technologies remain at the abstract level of principle. In this workshop, we will bridge principles with practice. We will present the model for cooperation between employers and employees on the use of AI technology in the workplace provided in the Negotia-Finansforbundet-NITO Co-Governance Guide, and discuss how management and labour can find mutually agreed solutions in order to: • enhance transparency and explainability. • ensure that risks and harms are limited and remedied • protect workers fundamental rights • build trust and sustainably improve workplace innovation Our aim is that the participants will learn how to influence how AI technology is used at their own workplace.
    Description:

In this interactive workshop we will explore the potential benefits of co-governing algorithmic management (AMS) systems in workplaces to reduce risks and harms and enhance sustainable workplace development. We will first introduce our Co-Governance Guide - a set of themes and questions that we propose should inform the dialogue between management and labour concerning the implementation of AMS. The Co-Governance Guide was developed in cooperation between Norwegian Unions Negotia, Finansforbundet and NITO, with the expertise of Dr. Christina Colclough, whose background is in labour market research and in the global labour movement. We will welcome any suggestions and input from participants and will ask the employer representative for his or her perspectives on inclusive governance. What are the barriers, what competencies do management and labour need, and what are the risks if algorithmic management systems are not inclusively governed? This workshop builds on experiences from trade unions across the world concerning the impacts of AMS in workplaces. Most recently, in a Nordic AI Union Summit held in February 2025, it was evident that management and labour are typically not engaging in meaningful dialogue over the deployment of AMS despite provisions to this end in existing laws and labour market agreements. We will discuss why this is the case and together with the participants find ways forward to ensure compliance with relevant laws and agreements, enhance labour-management cooperation and ensure the responsible, transparent and ethical deployment of AMS.
    Expected Outcomes
We hope the workshop will raise awareness about the particularities of workplace digital transformations in general and about algorithmic management systems specifically . Our aim is to inspire participants to engage in meaningful dialogue concerning the development and deployment of AMS. Participants will upon request receive an electronic copy of the Co-Governance Guide.
Hybrid Format: We welcome online participation via videolink, and will monitor the videolink for questions from remote participants. It will also be a possibility to integrate our online work platform Howspace as a coworking platform for the workshop participants, with a chat function, and to make resources such as our co-governance guide easily available.
